  • Strong noise in dark areas (vray 3.)

    Hi guys,
what could cause this? It seams the common thing is dark colours, not material itself since it occurs on many different materials where they are dark.
I use Solid rocks for preseting, but also tried vrays quick settings on 50% quality, both give this. I guess it would clear up if I really increase everything but need lower render times.

Here's how I setup my scene guys. I must be doing something wrong. I used to use vray sun/sky system with sky map in GI environment override. I put sky portals (simple) on all windows and light entrances.

Lately I've been using vray dome light with pro hdri map and also light portals. I put the dome anywhere, like beside the scene.

I've cleared that noise by increasing min samples from 1 to 4, but there must be a reason it looks that way.

I tried both large sky portals to cover one side, and many smaller lights to cover each hatch individually. In vray 2. big light portals didn't have enough samples (I could increase them manually) so by default I started using smaller ones so they all have the same samples. It seams vray 3. gives the same results.

did you try to turn off the light portals, i've read somewhere in this forum that there is an issue with light portals they are causing noise.
i'm not sure if this info is correct. but it won't hurt if you try turning them off.

Tried that too but then I get different kind of huge noise. Also I can't seam to control vray lights now individually, I tried one big portal light and I get much stronger noise then with many smaller ones...it seams now.

Hmmm, i see you have huge windows so,there shouldn't be any prob with the light coming in .
You said you usualy use vray sun & sky & now you're using hdri in dome light. Revert back to sun in sky to see what is the real prob.
Although personaly i use hdri alot in my scenes & never had similar issues.

Or It might be the indirect light strip above the bar causing this issue.
just remembered that i had a similar issue and it was a indirect light strip, i wasn't careful when i have put a vray light in the small groove, and it was causing alot of noise .

Yes, there is a light behind the shelves too. Both are mesh lights. But now I think it was due to the lack of light. My camera f number was 1.0 and needed shutter speen of 0.2 Maybe there was not enough light overall so some thresholds were cutting off the samples. The problem was when I increased the vrayhdri multiplier to 2.0 I got huge splotches all over so I reverted back to 1.0 or bellow to get a more subdued atmosphere. It's better now at least.

Generally it came down to me getting too used to Solid Rocks. Never had time to fully introduce myself with vray 3. since I only switched a month ago. When I used its new preset thingy everything got MUCH better and then near perfect with excelent render times.
Second thing was lack of light I think. I kept balancing between daylight and artificial lighting and ended up using 0.1 or even 0.01 in light intensity multipliers, I think that messed with vrays thresholds.

I'm making a velvet material and on this test render it all looks too noisy. I'm using quick settings with GI 50% and other two on 90%. I don't think it should look like that.
                Any ideas?

Oh maybe someone already mentioned this but I belive there's a bug if you type in a number above the AA quality. Then the slider starts to behave strangely, I think I screwed it up with that.

So in this scene I tried manual override of the light and put sampling of 100 and I still get this noise. Can I send it to someone so we get to the bottom of what is causing this and other noise areas in my scenes?
                    Thx

I am not a solidrock user & I don't use the vray presets for rendering, i can't figure out what's the problem in your renderings without seeing what are you're settings.

Turn off probabilistic lights if you have it on.

Render presets are no longer the best way to go with vray 3.3 + according to some official comments I have read in the forum iirc.
Posting your corrent settings will help us here.

Thanks guys. Here are the current settings. Probabilistc lights are off.
Max you mean render presets by third party plug ins like SR or I shouldn't use render presets from vray 3. quick settings menu?
