  • Very Tiny reflexion Guillochage effect

    Hello,
If there is somebody on the jewelry CG field, I will be glad to get some advice to render "Guillochage" finish.
I tried to add some sidelighting almost at object level to increase the effect, catch more reflection and more bump (to reveled more the pattern ) but with no luck.

I do increase the resolution to 4k using BF only, pushing the AA quality to 100%, shading quality to 100% and CG qality to 100% but the result is very disappointing. Turning ON the Fresnel make the pattern less visibles but I gain a little in reflection. Turning down the Map Blur doesn't improve it neither.
So I guess it has something to do with the shader and not with the rendering preset.

    Thanks for your advice.

Without checking out your scene, you could try making the shadow bias smaller for that light you added from the side. Try "0" and see if that does anything
    Kind Regards,

      Thanks Morne,
Could it be an issue with the quality of the map?
Per experience, when I look at a piece of metal with a guillochage, without special lighting, I can clearly see the pattern jumping out from the reflection.
In a studio setup (like in vray) is should be a lot easier to reveal the pattern than in a day light condition.

      Thanks.

Maybe it's just because I am not really familiar with the name or effect but when I take your scene and just make it a plain generic metal and leave the bump maps with 0.01 filtering I get a pretty strong pattern effect. Though I am pretty sure I am misunderstanding what you are after.

*edit* added another render with your blueish reflection color.

Thanks, for sure a plain reflective material is a good shortcut.
My goal is to achieved the subtle details, to make it look like a Guilloche.
Here are other sample where we can understand better the look of guilloche.

Looking at the Breguet Watch, maybe an occlusion may add more realism by increasing the groove.

          Thanks anyway for your test.
