  • Denoiser creates squares around HDR pixels

    Hi,

I've been noticing that denoiser often likes to create these tiny squares around pixels of HDR intensity.

So instead of suppressing these fireflies, it actually makes them pop out even more. I do not understand what's going on under the hood technically, but my guess is that maybe some of the render elements used as sources for denoising should be clamped before processed by denoiser... ?

Anyway, would be nice to get it fixed.

So it seems to be a lot more serious in higher resolutions, especially in DoF. Some of the squares have now size of buckets:

Would it be possible to send us an example scene with that issue?

I've seen this too. The only way to resolve it is to do a cleaner render, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a denoiser.

We are planning a fix for V-Ray Next: Update 2.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Sorry guys, it was somehow left behind. We'll try to add it in Update 3.

the issue seems to be worse with GPU
Started a simple scene with advanced (progressive), simple room with cam looking perpendicular at window. Lights coming in bounce of walls and ceiling. Takes "forever" to render. 1st denoise pass happens after about 5 min and naturally everything fuzzy, but looks ok(ish).

Same scene cleaner and render faster with GPU, even denoiser kicks in sooner (after about 1 minute). However, with GPU, as soon as the denoiser kicks in, those square HDR artifacts the OP mentioned, are WAY WORSE in GPU
                    Kind Regards,
                    Morne

Yeah, it is one of the reasons why I am not using GPU.

I have seen this artifacts at Vray for Rhino Next too and I would be glad to see a fix too.
