  • Problem with VRayLightSelect element for VRayIES lights

The problem occurs when a scene has an HDRI in a dome light in conjunction with VRayIES lights - the VRayLightSelect element for the IES lights has a strange radial noise pattern to it, seemingly radiating from the camera, making it unusable in the comp.

As you can see from the attached images, all rendered with the same settings, the VRayLightSelect element is fine when it is just the HDRI OR IES lights in the scene, but with both of them, the weirdness is introduced into the VRayLightSelect element for the IES lights.

I have tried different IES and HDRI files, but it still produces a similar effect, albeit varied by the shape of the IES file. I have also tried both the Physical camera and the old VRayPhysicalCamera.

I have only just migrated from VRay 2.5 & max 2015 to 3.5 & max 2016, and this is not an issue I have encountered previously. Is it a recognised issue I should be aware of, or am doing something daft?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Lighting issues

Ok, following on from my post yesterday, this issue is not limited to VRayIES lights, but is also occurring with VRayLights too, as the attached selection of render channels shows. It is also affecting the Shadow channels as well.

The lighting for the scene is as follows:

    - HDRi for primary lighting
    - A VRay Plane Light below each of the crystal ceiling pendants
    - A VRay Mesh Light, consisting of several mesh light bulbs for the crystal ceiling pendants - set to only include the crystal light fittings, ceiling and coving (too much general noise introduced if they affect the whole scene)
    - VRayIES lights to the dressing area through the open door in the centre distance
    - VRayIES lights to the area outside the room through the partially open door on the right

This is a live project with a deadline approaching, so any help from Chaos or users would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Do you use the latest Vray 3.50.04? I had a similar looking issue before with the adaptive lights feature.

        Great, thank you!

I hadn't realised 3.50.04 was out, or that it could be a problem with Adaptive Lights, but yes, after installing the update it has resolved the main issue in the Lighting channels.

The large artifacts still remain in the Shadow channels though, so if anyone has any pointers on that, it would be much appreciated. I'm hoping that when rendered out at full resolution the shadow artifacts won't be noticeable in the RGB channel....

        Thanks again.

Happy to help. You can switch from adaptive to full lights evaluation to see if this solves the remaining issue. I only encountered these particular blocky artefacts with adaptive lights.

Yes, switching to Full Lights Evaluation sorted out the blocky artefacts, so thanks again! It's a shame this feature is still a little buggy.

Going a little off topic, but this being the first project I've done in VRay 3.5, I've also noticed that the RawReflection render element is unusable in the comp. I have always used it to boost reflections where needed in post and it is usually a mirror like image, but now appears mainly white. The VRayRefelection element is fine, just the Raw version. Any ideas on why this is happening?

            Thanks.

Those scene will be very useful to improve Adaptive Lights algorithm, would it be possible to send them for investigation?

Ok, will do. The bedroom scene will need to be stripped down a bit before sending. Should I email you a WeTransfer link?

WeTransfer is fine. However keep in mind that it is not possible to fix the issue with the shadow channel and adaptive lights for the moment. You will have to use either full or probabilistic lights. You will have to decide if you need the shadow element or not.

                  Best regards,

Thanks for the scene, we managed to replicate the issue and to fix it.
The fix will be available in the next official version of the product.
