  • Computer hangs/freezes while rendering

This is something I never had before. When rendering with the ADV renderer, my mouse lags while trying to do some basic windows functions, or even color correcting with the VFB or whatnot. Sometimes the whole computer just hangs for a few seconds, nothing moves or anything and then it unfreezes and I can see the buckets have moved a few times in the meantime. In every scene, simple (material testing scene) or complex (interior with lots of bounces etc), it doesn't matter. This is AFTER I did a complete format and reinstall of my system and upgraded from vray 3.60.01 to .03. I don't want to roll back just yet.

    3DSMAX 2016

    Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 15063) (15063.rs2_release.170317-1834)
    System Model: Z9PE-D8 WS
    Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2695 v2 @ 2.40GHz (48 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
    Memory: 65536MB RAM
    Card name: NVIDIA Quadro K4000

i have the same thing o dual XEON machine - setting low render priority doesnt help at all
i started encountering this with the newest incarnation of WIN 10

      its MEGA annoying

problem is that when i set the processors affinity to a certain application, it never remembers and i have to set it up every time :-/// it resets itself even when computing LC...and imagine when i do animation

Unfortunately this option is active and doesn't help as pixelbox stated too. So there's no solution then?

You can't do that in Windows 10

CPU problem , At work i have i7 with 32 Gb ram, and with "Low treared priority" checked in vray Settings tab i still can use Photoshop and edit some raw's and render at same time. At home i have 2 diferents workstations both dual xeon, and if i try to work on Ps while render it freezes alot. So i think behaviour it's comon with dual CPU.

I never trusted windows 10. apart from directX 12 (I have not checked that but I bet 2018 is not utilising it) what is there to gain from upgrade?

Anthonyh and Glorybound, sorry but i think you in the task manager go to Details tab, not in Process and you can find 3dsmax.exe and change to "low priority"

We have this problem lately in 3ds Max 2018. Whilst rendering the whole computer freezes up including the VFB and you cant cancel a render and have to wait until it is done. We have to force crash 3ds Max to stop a render which is not ideal at all. It happens 95% of the time with progressive and bucket. Never had this issue in 2017 so thinking Autodonk may have broken something

I have the exact same problem but only when using bucket rendering and only for a few seconds at a time, but is hangs often enough to make doing anything else on the workstation impossible. Low-thread priority enabled. My system is an old Z820 with dual Xeons and 64GB of RAM.

Same problem indeed, with progressive I don't have this either. Forgot to test. Guess I'm using progressive for now. System is probably just as 'old' and more or less same specs but that isn't the problem.

Didn't have this before (3 year old workstation), I did a format with the exact same OS I had before the format. Though it might be .03 version but I'm not willing to do a rollback.

Edit: some scenes also have problems with progressive with more or less the same result.

I have had the same problem of late, Vray 3.60.02 in max 2016 on windows 10.
I thought it might have to do with the fact I use Bitsum Process Lasso but have not taken time to test and investigate. If I remember to set vray to low priority it seams to work fine.

Same problem on two identical machines, also HP Z820. But we are on Windows 7.
It helps to assign 3dsMax to one core only, then the lag is gone. Afterwards you can set it to all cores again using the taskmanager.
