  • Rendering Blanks screen

    Hi all,

I don't know if my computer is dying but when I render, the screen freezes and then suddenly popped back in. Sometimes the screen freezes and goes black then the screen comes back as normal but the 3ds max view-ports a greyed out.

I have a pretty good computer. Don't know why its happening. Have you guys had this problem?

Ill keep testing but this seems to happen mostly in bucket rendering mode.

    Thanks

    Steve ~

Thanks guys. Man this is 1 problem solving activity after another. I set up distributed rendering but now my computers crash when I render.

I hired a network rendering licence and purchased a computer for network rendering - it was hard to set up and then I discovered that there is no IPR support. Now when I use the production render button my computer has a heart attack.

I want to specify exactly what is wrong so I can fix it.

My computer even crashes when I use VRay benchmark.

Thanks for pointing me to the Event Viewer. I'm just going to learn how to use it. I will run some tests.

In the mean time, may I ask how do I make sure that when I do distributed rendering that the other computer has the files?

                Thanks again.

I stopped using DR years ago. I opted for one large machine with a ton of cores and a ton of RAM. I spent more time managing the servers than creating images.

So - I have no crashes at all when I unchecked multi-threading on my workstation. My CPU works away at 17% while the slave works its ass off.

Im glad this completely stopped the crashes.

Now I just have to figure out a way to allow multi-threading, assigning an amount of cores so when I render the workstation CPU runs at about 75% load with the rest available to run the computer.

Should I ask Vlado to code up something like the Renderman render settings where you can assign how many threads? - I can make a product suggestion?

I figured out how to set a programmes affinity. Use Task Manager > Details > Right Click 3DS Max > Set Affinity.

                      Remove 2

Okay - Things are getting more under control

I would like Vray to implement some control over the amount of cores used in rendering. I don't know if disabling cores using Affinity will also make other tasks in 3ds max slower, like transferring the files to the slave render nodes for example.

Nooooow I have yet anooother problem ;(

Look at the artefacts in the buckets.

.I will try to get rid of these artefacts seen above. Then I will assess if DR it worth is after I get some successful renders going. For now it has been very painful and potentially pointless. If it does not work out I will ask Chaos for a refund for sure.

                          Thanks everyone for your help.

it looks like the gamma is different on your slave or something.

It was a missing plugin not installed on the slave. So it works.

Thank you everyone for your help! Thank you Bobby.

Since I cannot afford a monster, I will save up for one. in the mean time I will test DR for maybe, 1 more week. Ill give it my best effort. Hopefully its viable.
