  • Glossy reflections are flickering in a weird way

    Hi

I have been doing some simple GI tests which were riddled with flickering, but I have now come to realize that the flickering was not caused by the GI, but is in fact present only in the reflections.

See Quicktime link for reference of flickering (pay attention to ceiling and floor) - and check image attachment for my render/shader settings.
Shader is applied to majority of concrete structure in scene, save for gliding concrete part (which has a very similar shader).

Where did I screw up? ...or is this a bug?

if you used light cache - use for glossy rays, this might be the cause, see if its better without it. What kind of GI is it?

Brute Force/Light Cache. My render + GI settings is in the image posted above.
I have tried rendering with Brute Force/Brute Force as well - the issue is exactly the same.

GI + Reflection render elements compared. A bow shaped curve was applied for extra light (clarity) in post.

A friend of mine did tests with Vray GPU, which did not produce the flicker, but that is not really an option for me (and I'd really like Vray Adv to produce the results I want).
I also tried simplifying the shader tree so the Output map is skipped and the curves adjustment to the map is being applied directly in the Bitmap loader instead. The results are exactly the same.

            Any suggestions?

            Edit:
            Scene (max 2016 - vray 3.6.04) attached.

We are currently investigating your scene. I will do some tests and I will contact you as soon as there are any news. For now you could try using Full evaluation for the light solution(Global switches) and see if this would help.

                Thanks!

Do Full evaluation have any impact on the reflections in the scene (as it seems, by my tests - see above, that I have narrowed the issue down to the reflections)?
I have also done a new test scene with a similar scenario and new similar shader with the same bitmap texture, where I have no problems and no flickering in the reflections. I would just love to know what went wrong, so I can avoid doing it in the future.
