Pirate Software is probably not the culprit here, but the difference of wage and standard living more probably. A talented CG artist in india may cost 600 USD (just guessing).

In 2007 i used to work for an American MNC as assistant manager called Steve & Barrys & my monthly salary was $800 that time!

i am based in Mumbai which is a financial hub of India. Rent for my 2bhk apartment is nearly $500 per month. I am a 37 year old cg artist with 14 years of experience. how much should my monthly wages be to have a decent standard of living in your opinion? please note, i am still in a rental apartment & a decent 600 sqft 2bhk apartment will cost me minimum $225000 which is way beyond my capacity!! i come across many inquiries from US & UK for arch viz & most of them are looking for visuals in the price range of $50 to $150.. i dont know what makes this figure sustainable for anyone here..

So this is kinda on topic...I've been asking around and probably gave these guys more website visits then they had a few days ago but how do I make renders like these? And are those even rendered with vray?
        https://www.tolkointeriors.ru/

Recently I've been writing chaos guys to finally have some of them (they can't be all just programmers, they must have at least one guy who can make this) to make 3 or 4 amazing interiors and tell us exactly how to make them. I just can't make my renders as crisp as these. I use every new project to test new things since I don't have time or energy to play with vray anymore. I want a recepie, I know it's lazy, I know it's "cheating" but I just need a tool guide.

These look like renders, and among other things, a bit of a sharpen filter in post

vray still will be good value IMO and is an acceptable cost, Im not condoning it but you could look at using cracked 3dmax to help absorb that cost, given its way overpriced or look at buying half the year and pirating the other half.
I wouldn't be where I was now without using this strategy when i started out.

These are quite horrible.....can you render with a sharpen filter or sharpen and some highlight compression in post to get this look?

Totally off topic considering the topic is Should we worry about Chos group Licence model being shift to rental?

Also as squintnic already said, those examples are horrible, way too sharp, not nice at all. Grab yourself a really nice digital SLR, take a few interior shots and see if you can get results like that, without using photoshop.

They are just so obviously CG

Finally why would anyone at Chaos Group, want to produce a bunch of interiors along with tutorials. They are not Vray Tutors as far as I am aware, despite the fact that they have produced the most popular render engine and a few other top notch applications, plugins etc.

There are plenty of folk out there that are, some insanely good, others not so much, that can teach you everything you want to know but that really depends on whether you are willing to pay or not and You Tube is a good resource for those who don't want to pay while https://www.learnvray.com/ is the place to go, if you are willing to invest in some of the best training there is..

How on Earth is this 'kinda' on topic !

In answer to the original post, no, we shouldn't worry about anything (worry is not good).

On a serious note, to a degree yes I think we should be concerned. As I'm getting more into VR, I was a little disappointed to learn that V-Ray for Unreal is offered on a rental basis only (I simply do not like to 'rent' my software).

However, whilst V-Ray for Unreal isn't extortionately priced, my yearly software costs are getting a little ridiculous (think plug-ins, Autodesk, scripts, upgrades, material libraries, new software etc etc).

How is it that Pixelogic produces a phenomenal product with free upgrades year after year since the dawn of civilisation, and yet nearly all other companies do not operate this way. What is it that Pixelogic are doing which the others cannot emulate ? (I think they are a private company, yet still, how does that work ?).

I definitely think consideration should be held for those at the 'Indie' end of the spectrum (a la Houdini et al) for the reason I gave above (though I've always wondered how authors could stop themselves being ripped off should everyone claim they were Independent/Freelancer earning less than $xxx, xxx per annum).

Thanks for your comments. So at least I'm not the only one to worry about Chaosgroup trends towards rental mode. I just hope a new player will arrive before Chaos shift to rental, so we will have a choice. We don't get one single official deny on this thread, so that's a solid proof to upgrade from worries to evidence. My guess: probably on V5, so before 2 years from now.

Have you actually made a formal inquiry? I mean these are the user forums after all, and you did get an informal denial here.

                        Hey guys,

Thanks for all the feedback so far. While I cannot promise anything for all of eternity, for the moment we do not have plans to remove the perpetual licenses. However, we might introduce additional licensing models in the future alongside the perpetual licenses, similar to how we have rentals now (it may or may not be interesting for you to know that the rentals are actually doing pretty well). I would also like to point out that, for better or worse, V-Ray is pretty much the sole remaining renderer out there that does not require some form of subscription or maintenance fee.

                        Best regards,
                        Vlado
