A grayscale Z-depth/Zbuffer would be nice nice for those compositing DOF in stills using the PS Lens Filter.

did you consider rendering to rpf and splitting the file to its components using this script:

I guess I was initially put-off by the Max3 version association. Now, how do you get that first script to work??? I tried saving out - no luck so far.

I got it to work. but the resulting images are black and white- not grayscale (shaded to show /DOF/falloff)...

hmm
did you try setting the far clipping plane of the camera to your scene bounds?
otherwise your gradient is stretched too wide and your close objects reside in the black area of the depth gradient
for one of the zdepth types in max (gbuffer vs. rpf) you had to manually set the bounds of the scene depth (by clipping planes or by specifying the max depth)

Beautiful. Thanks so much. Scene bounds did the trick!
Now that that's accomplished- if it wasn't too much work down the road, it would still be handier if the grayscale data option was built into the buffer layers.
