  • VFB Blur layer?

    Example: a current scene and looking at the light mix I am seeing that some car lights are pretty noisy where they hit the ground.
    The rest of the frame is fine - just the lights are too noisy, especially if I choose to adjust them.
    In the composite tab I have added an exposure layer to the particular lights and using that I can clearly see where the light extends too. I can even reduce some of the far away noise that occurs.
    If I let it render for all time then it would not be clean but with a simple blur on that element it should be problem solved - it's what I would do in post.
    So is a blur layer possible to include or is that more of a headache than I realise?

    Hello,

    So in your case you'll convert the light mix to composite and then add a blur only on some of the elements there right ?

        Just to add to this, I meant to give the example of this being useful by quoting the docs page where it says:

        ''Push the new values “To Scene” and re-render (this is especially helpful if you notice noise or artifacts from pushing the Light Mix too far).''

        As this particlar render takes quite a while, I only notice that I'm pushing the values by experimenting.
        So, I don't really want to re-render when a blurring of elements could easily reduce the artifacts.

        As an additional question, here https://www.chaosgroup.com/blog/reli...duEAyuv3C3HIbM it shows a denoise section in the light mix. I don't have this, so did you take it out for some reason?

          Yep we removed the per element denoising in the LightMix for now. There are some workflow issues that need to be solved before we can bring it back.

            Aah ok, so it may well be that that was exactly what I was, sort of, looking for?
            Meanwhile a blur would still be be a good idea...or not? I'm tired, so maybe I'm not thinking of this in the right way.

              Blur/sharpen has been requested already - I was mostly wondering if needs to be applicable for individual layers or on top of the other layers.

                I applied e.g. exposure to only the specific lights and it worked fine in the comp tab, so it'd be just like any other correction no? Or does it work differently to that?

                Anyway, general compliment incoming....you guys did a brilliant job with this so far; I love it and if only we had this years ago....the lifetimes of rendertimes it could have saved!

                  Thanks for the kind words

                  Blur/Shapren are a bit different to the other corrections - most other corrections take one pixel, do some calculations on it and give result. Filters like blur require the adjacent pixels to calculate the result for a given pixel making their calculation a bit heavier... those are just details though
