  • VRayLight option for projecting texture without diffusing the light

I would like VRayLight to have the ability to be shaped like a spotlight (eg. disc + directional set to 0.7) but with the added option of tweaking how much the light is diffused (or how straight the beams are, if you will).
In the most simple example: Imagine a movie projector shooting a beam out from a small spot filling up a screen. If I do this with a VRayLight as of now (VRay 5.1 update 1) the only way to project a sharp image onto the screen is to make the light bigger and the directional setting set to 1.0.

For now I am using a standard (legacy) 3ds max spotlight set to use VRayShadows (with the added benefit that I can tweak the shadow size without blurring the texture I'm projecting). But I'm always weary of performance hits when using what I feel are hacky methods.
On the subject - are legacy 3ds max light sources slower for lighting/GI calculations than VRayLights? My guess would be yes.

I saw this thread with (what I read to be) a somewhat similar proposal:

We don't have plans to imitate that particular behavior in VRayLights, but in your case there shouldn't be any slowdowns using Max spot lights.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

matanov Okay - thanks for the performance info on Max spot lights. Good to know.
