  • Displacement value thru bitmap

This is a must. A value of displacement or any value for that matter should be able to be controlled by texture. I.E. for example I have an animated procedural texture for my displacement map. I cant change its animation. But I need to be able to make the displacement weaker in some areas and more defined in the others. I know it can be done by bledning another texture on the dispalcement map itself but I thought this would be a good option.

Another wish would be for displacement direction. In mental ray its possible to set various directions using RGB as XYZ driven channel. Like a normal map sort of. I think this will ease the pain of those who make grass using displacement.
    Thanks.

I like the normal map idea.

it is a neat idea indeed...and i like the pseudo 3d approach in mr...and di some waving gras with it myself...but i guess it would take down one of our biggest advantages of vray´s displacement....it´s INCREDIBLY fast...taking normal-mapping might slow it down a lot as i assume it is pretty damn optimised....correct me if i´m wrong vlado!

I'm a big fan of map slots for anything.. flexibility rocks.

But i dont see how a map slot for value would be anything other than a modification of the map to begin with, it would essentially do the same thing as if you had comp'd/masked it in the displacement map slot correct?

the main advantage of which being you can use a single displacement map, and modify it per object to get different portions, but again, instanced maps in a larger material tree would do essentially the same thing right?

with the added disadvantage of making it much harder to find the displaced height values at a given geometry point, albeit thats not too useful in a procedural type map anyway other than an adjustment of the min/max

RGB Direction would be godly, with alpha as displaced value?
