Just tested it, the rendertimes seems to be the same with a simple setup.
However I can't get it to make the same result with a shellac material compared to a standard material with a checker map for diffuse and a noise map in the self-illumination slot. Vlado, can you get it to look the same, if so, please share with the rest of us.
Thomas, blend will produce heavy render times when blending between a solid mat and a refractive/transparent mat, say wood and glass...try that you will see noticeble difference.
I was referring to the case where you blend/shellac normal materials. However, the VRayLightMtl is ok with this - it doesn't really do anything with scene lights, it just returns a single color.
