  • VraySky tint/saturation

playing with the mental ray realtime sky in the max 2008 demo...
    it's very nice...
i wish there was a tint/saturation spinner for the sky in the VraySky...
    the mr_sun is antialiased too

what do you mean antialiased? If its anything like vray, its a map, no geometry involved, so how can it anti aliased?

the sun is aliased by default, but i found out that it can be fixed by using "subpixel mapping" and "clamp colors".

i used a sun size multiplier of 5.0 to match the mental ray sun size.

      mental ray sun

      mental ray sun

      vray sun

vray sun fixed (subpixel mapping and clamp)

      vray sun fixed

i didn't try hard to match the gamma because i'm not familar with mental ray.
i'm quite happy with the vray sun, i just think mental rays tinting and saturation option rock:

I agree, physically accurate is often not enough; some extra controls are essential, like you mention above.

What's different from the ozone - turbidity in the tinting?
The only thing it has is the saturation controls...
If only max had a proper color correction map inside, it'd be dead easy to do...

I don't know, if I render with mr without Logaritmic exposure and into a floating-point frame buffer, it looks just as jagged as the V-Ray one...

Note that by default mr renders to a 16-bit frame buffer and clamps the output, which is equivalent to the clamp output+subpixel mapping options.

Otherwise, you can use the ColorCorrect texture to tint the sky in any way you wish.

            Best regards,

the really cool thing about the sky controls in max 2008 is the realtime preview.
you can tweak and get quite accurate results in the viewport, with the new realtime shadows and shaders.
the vray sun works with real time shadows too, when the daylight system is used, but the sky doesn't update automatically. i think there is a script for that though...

why didn't i think of that?

it actually works, even for viewport background!
                very cool

3D is probably the most fun you can _legally_ have...if not, it's definitely up there.

                    There is, in my scriptpack.
And it has identical performances to that of Mr (dare i say it, a little bit better, no waiting for the sky to activate as BG image), with the difference that you don't see the disk sun (but clearly see its glow).
                    So no love loss there.
