  • plz improve DR UNC operation

If there is one thing in VRay that consumes time and is counter productive is the need to make sure that each texutre / proxy is set to UNC.

In MR I just check the DBR option and it handles it all by itself.

    thx

V-Ray currently uses the Windows networking functions; V-Ray does not deal with the network directly.

The mental ray DBR map manager does not rely on Windows network settings; instead it transfers the maps directly to the render slaves, so it does not really use UNC functions.

We may look into this at some point.

But MR's way of doing it is so much easier.

Can you add an option to do it that way ?

since vrayproxies show up in the asset tracking list, it's easy enough to resolve to unc for those.
but i agree; would be nice if it was taken care of automatically, yesterday i too found out that my proxies weren't rendering trough backburner, the hard way.

I can of course, but it takes time. Like I said, we may look into this.

Bound to be flamed here but... am I the only one who thinks using UNC paths is easy? I've almost forgotten that this was ever an issue. I NEVER save or use any assets locally, all my shortcuts are created from UNC paths. So when I open an explorer window for a project it is using UNC. If I drag and drop an asset into the ME or where ever, the path is UNC.

Also you can set the asset tracker and/or preferences to convert paths to UNC.

This is just a fact of life of working on a network. InDesign, Dreamweaver, AutoCAD... all external references have to be UNC. or at least you have to pay a little attention to the path.

here is a great script for remapping assets if you've moved them to a network drive. (just be sure to use UNC paths with it )

                  google is your friend:

                  "Uniform Naming Convention
The UNC, short for Universal Naming Convention or Uniform Naming Convention, specifies a common syntax to describe the location of a network resource, such as a shared file, directory, or printer. The UNC syntax for Windows systems is as follows:

                  \\ComputerName\SharedFolder\Resource"
