  • material editor improvement for vray

    Hi,

I often look at the great material-previews in maxwell, that displays very very nice, the materials for maxwell.

When Rendering , most time we use Vray sun, sky, and vray cam together with reinhard, to get fast good images..

but materials in the materialeditor very often dont reflect the behavior of materials in such lightsetups or scenes.

i tried to produce a custom material-editor Scene , together with vray sun and vray standart lightsetup as described above, but the materialeditor doesnt seem to use my custom vray materialscene to reflect the "real" real behavior of our materials.

it gets overbright.. do i do something wrong ?

So my wish... a posibillity to get much better previews for vray materials inside the materialeditor or... a sort of custom materialeditor...

what do you all think about..

    Tom

You will need to decrease the sun intensity, since the renderer settings are not loaded from the material sample scene.

Other than that, have you looked at the V-Ray material studio from ASGVis? Is this what you have in mind?

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Hallo Vlado,

      thank you for your reply

Thats what i have seen, when trying a better materialpreview in max..

Well, the ASGVis Material Studio, i didnt see yet.. but ill take a look.

I wonder how the workflow would be when using it integratet with max.

Isnt there a way for Chaosgroup, to build in Max a better Material preview ?

Most materials in Max look very different to the final renderings ...

      greetings Tom

I'm with you Tom, in my opinion a better material preview would be a great improvement to everyone's workflow; not to mention that max standard ME was never be implemented since 1.0 release, when everything was a lot easier than today.
In the meantime I found that NodeJoe plugin its a great step ahead in managing complex material tree! ...but probably you already know all about it.

Anyone have a clue if you can use this with Max? I couldn't find any documentation and the site only really mentions this as a Rhino tool.

                Thanks,

You can't use it with 3ds Max, AFAIK, I was mostly asking if this is the general kind of thing Tom had in mind.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

                    That would explain it.

Well i´ve downloaded this tool now, but hadnt the time to play a bit with it.

What i would prefer much more was a much improved materialeditor inside of max, with the ability, to substitute newer renderengines and material-scenes as we know it from maxwell. I dont know if chaos has any influence on this, or could replace the workflow with an own technology , but looking for maxwell it seems possible also inside of the max matrialeditor..

of course if the realtime aproaches of next vray is fast, many materialeditor adustments could be done inside of the realtime viewport.

but still you would need a good libary with a reliable preview of materials..

dont hate me for saying this, but Fryrenders material editor (in the max plugin) is quite nicely done.

Yes it is... as well as the Maxwell render editor. the main thing i think is needed is the option to create different preview scenes calibrated to the scene we work on at a given time, but also have a one good calibrated preview scene like fryrender and maxwell have for consistent material creation that will look as expected in all lighting conditions.

also... the Vray For C4D has a nice layer implementation. didn't study that too much but it seems more powerful then what we have in max currently.

                              cheers
