  • VRay Camera Sterescopic support for upcoming Service Pack

So Mental Ray 3.8 will come out with Stereoscopic rendering capabilities.

    "Stereoscopic Rendering

mental ray supports stereoscopic rendering in a single run with optimal performance. It will generate the two images for the left and the right eye automatically. Only the primary rendering algorithms like rasterizer and ray tracing (of eye rays) are effected by the slight offset of the eye. Secondary effects with view dependency like tessellation or final gathering are not affected but use the "center" eye as usual. The stereo rendering should not influence existing shaders. The mental ray display protocol has been extended to send stereoscopic information across the connection, and the image tools have been updated accordingly to cope with stereo image files and to display images life when rendering in stereo. The stereo rendering is enabled with a camera setting."

Is something like that in the works for the VRay Camera or better as a Render Global working with any camera? 3D is the next big thing since AVATAR was a game changer. Every renderer equipts itself with stereoscopic features in the next releases.

Hope you got that feature high on the list since VRay is used in alot of VFX houses like Prime Focus VFX.

    kind regards,

Yep, there is already a VRayStereoscopic plugin floating around; if you search the forum you will find it.

I searched and found the Plugin, however the max2010 build for 32 and 64 bit causes a DLO error when launching Max. Had to uninstall

I donwloaded the build from this Post by you which i belive is the latest:

did you put it in the vrayplugins sub-folder? (you have to do that with other additional vrayplugins)

          Got it to work now
is the helper supposed to be aligned to the exact camera position?
When rendering thru a standard camera with SSS2 material applied objects rendering hangs to eternity at the last bucket
Is it possible to have both eyes rendered to separate images (including all render elements)?
For a real life production this is not useful yet but promising to be

          my 2 cents.

The helper can be anywhere in the scene.

About the hanging issue, I'm aware of that, will fix it. The helper cannot produce two images (I need to modify V-Ray for this), so you'll have to separate them manually.

            Best regards,

Does this setup include any Horizontal Shift? I've got my best stereo results when using horizontal shift setup with toed in cameras.

Not in the last version I posted, but I'm working on an updated version that has the option to focus the cameras using shift instead of rotation.

Can you explain the eye distance? If I set it at 0 I am seeing what my vraycamera is seeing, but if I set it something other than 0 then it is cropping my image. Is it between the eyes? Should it be a small number, but the greater the distance the more effect? Should the distance be around 2.5 inches?

There seems to be some issue with the physical camera if you have the "Adjust resolution" option selected. It works fine with standard camera or without the option.
