    I wish lights could be controlled to have soft or hard edges, fake a soft box without having to do all the setup.

    That would be awesome for studio lighting setups!
    It's a great idea that would save a lot of setup time with mapping textures on the lights.
    Reflect, repent and reboot.

      you can do that by applying a gradient to your light.

        And after you do it once, you can re-use very easily. Maybe have a set of gradients with different sizes of edge blurs. I recently used a psd gradient map in the opacity slot for some nice soft light box reflections.
