The Vray displacement mod does this already - stick it into subdivision mode with no texture!

Have you tried using a vraydisplacement modifier set to "subdivision"?

And make sure the displacement amount is zero; otherwise V-Ray will apply a default noise texture for displacement.

              It's somewhat faster in V-Ray 2.0 Beta 3.

              Best regards,

and why isn't this shouted about more? This is one of Rendermans' main features!

                  Be proud Vlado!

guys sorry for my ignorance but what is this good for when you can simply do this with turbosmooth modifier?

There are two main reasons why it's better: a) it's view-dependent - V-Ray will subdivide based on the distance to the object which saves RAM if the object is not visible or far away b) since it is dynamic geometry, V-Ray can do much higher subdivision levels that what you can do with turbosmooth.

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado

Would it be possible to have something like this visible in the viewport?

You can put a Turbosmooth under the vraydisp mod...
then put Render Itterations to 0 and viewport to 1 or 2.

Are you guys talking about the same feature as implemented in the new modo? Modo 501 looks very hot.
