I didn't quite understand what exactly is the modo feature... for the V-Ray stuff, we were talking about its render time subdivision mode. Whether or not this corresponds to modo 501's feature I don't know.

Basically you can set a weight value for edge in Modo so you can make a crease in render not model. 3ds max has this in MeshSmooth. Nobody uses it though. It is very useful for hard surface model, because you don;t need to add chamfer for every hard edges,

Ah that. No, V-Ray does not support it for the moment in its render-time subdivision surfaces. Can't say we've gotten much (if any) requests for it

          Can I request it then
I think it would be a great addition to the rendertime subdivision surfaces.

We'll see about that... I remember Pixar had a few patents in that regard; they may be about something else, but in any case the matter must be aproached with caution

U can do it with turbo smooth too !

              Try this

Edit poly > Set smothing poly
TS > Set smoothing by smothing poly
second TS > normal set up to get chamfer effect

Wuaila... its just a bit... poly hungry ^^

Finally trying this out - just wondering if the edge length parameter is really important, or do you just play with Max subdivisions, basically setting that as you would the Turbosmooth modifier? I'm assuming the edge length still affects things, so if I just set that super low and let the max sub-d take care of the rest, would that be the basic workflow?

Edge Length is essentially the desired pixel size of a triangle.

Yes, but how to incorporate that into the specific workflow here is the question - it seems redundant when using this to replace TS. I'm just trying to figure out the most simple and render time efficient workflow.
