  • Vector Graphics in Vray...?

It occurred to me that I'm not aware of any way to use vector maps in Vray materials (or anywhere else in Max, for that matter). Can this in fact be done and I am missing something very basic, or is there a reason this is not possible?

It seems like this would be immensely powerful since vector graphics don't have resolution restrictions like bitmaps, and they can be potentially very small in file size.

Often times I map a site of a corporate campus for an aerial shot, but then have to make a second set of maps for close up shots since the aerial bitmap falls apart once you get close. It seems like if I based my materials on maps I drew up in illustrator, I'd have the size and flexibility of a procedural map, and yet the customizability of a bitmap...

    ...any thoughts?

(I'm not sure if this post should be under wishlist, 3d max general, or render theory...feel free to move it, if it should be somewhere else)

Well, there are two practical approaches to rendering vector maps; the first is to convert them to bitmaps at render time with a dynamic resolution based on the distance to the camera; the second is to attempt to shade each surface point separately using the vector information. The first may take a lot of RAM, the second one may be very slow. In the end it's not clear if any advantages would remain.
