  • VRay Frame Buffer Region Saving

Can we please allow region rendering with the VRay Frame buffer? It's really been messing with me lately, and when region rendering isn't even on vray reports the error that it can't save to a region. The Max frame buffer can save regions no problem and as much as I love the VRay FB I'm going to stop using it because it's driving me crazy.

Look, there is clearly no region render set yet VRay Frame Buffer won't save the file. Wasted another 2hrs...Click image for larger version

    Is it just me?

(ps, the render is fine I've just blacked it out for screenshotting)

I have had that message pop up a few times lately but the renders turned out fine as well.

Everytime that message pops up, I get a 113mb EXR file (multichannel) that is completely black. To confirm there is NO region set anywhere and it pops up randomly for me if I've _ever_ used region rendering in the scene.

You saving to a local or network drive? I have had some issues with exr and network paths so had to switch to vrimg files to get around it.

              Brett,
Network Drive UNC paths, and that might fix the issue, but I'm not willing to compromise by generating vrimg files. The normal max fb can do multichannel exr files and regions all you want, and I love the VRay FB, but I'm losing lots of time to getting this error so I'm leaving the VRay FB.

Don't think so. I don't use the VRay Frame Buffer anymore and I miss it, but this is a deal breaker. Combined with not having Maxscript access (by default) to the region renderable of Vray (of which I have the additional plugin allowing this), it's really infuriating. I don't have much on my wishlist, but:

              1. Allowing Region renders with the VRayFrameBuffer and .vrimg/.exr files
              2. Fixing my issue where it gives the error that region rendering is on, when it is not

For the time being, I will continue to use the normal max fb to output multichannel exr files, but I do it begrudgingly.

I find it frustrating as well. Converting VRMG files is pretty slow (even with the buffer increased) and just adds a lot of wasted time and gigs of additional files for me. I'd like to see it working properly with exr too.

Ok, glad it's not just me. I just feel like a fool for trying to get everyone in the office to switch to the VRay Frame buffer and then having to concede to these dealbreakers. *sigh*.

Definitely not I've been waiting for 25 minutes for a vrimg to convert and it's only 61% done. I feel the pain on a daily basis.

Switch to the max one imho for the time being.

I haven't used the Max one in a long while - and it seems to be only showing 16bit clamped images. Is the MFB not fully 32bit? Is there a switch somewhere that I can't find?

Use the -bufSize option to give it more memory for the conversion; the default is 10 MB which may be way too low for large images.

Other than that, region rendering and saving to OpenEXR files has already been fixed for V-Ray 2.0.

                          Best regards,
                          Vlado

That time was with it set to 100. Tried 1000 too, but that brought my machine to a crawl (could barely move the mouse) so dialed it back. It's still pretty slow going for some reason.

Good news on the EXR format though: I had thought it was an autodesk thing, happy to hear it's resolved!
