  • irradiance map and glossiness

why is the glossiness calculation not stored with the irradiance map when saved?

  • #2
Because glossiness is view-dependent, whereas the samples in the irradiance map are not (they look the same no matter from which direction you look at them). Calculating and storing information for glossy stuff so that you can view it from any angle would be slow and very memory-consuming.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

ok, but when you do stills and and render the irradiance map it would be great if you donĀ“t have to render the glossiness again when you load the saved irradiance map again.

if i remember correctly they were originally tied togeher, but so many people complained that they want more control over glossies. So they became seperate passes.

You're partially correct but I don't think it was ever actually stored with a saved map (just calculated in the same passes and held in memory) due to what Vlado's described.
