Personally I hope for a lower memory consumption with photon mapping!!
Do you know that by adjusting the max density value you can greatly reduce the memory requirements for photon maps?
If max density is set to 0 that means all emitted photons are included in the final photon map. This is a lot of data. If you the max density it to something higher than 0 it will average photons within the given radius (max density is the radius in 3ds max units), and you end up with a result that looks just as good, but needs 1/20th or less of memory compared to the max density 0 map. The optimal value to use for the max density depends on your scene scale, so experiment.
But often to get better result the max dist must be low not 0 not 1 and so the memory is going to be not enough!!!
If I reduce this value (excuse me I increase) I get less accurate solution with errors on the room's corner etc so....
I work in mm for the architecturals interiors VRAY photons usage like all
But If I miss something tell me!!
thanks for the reply EGZ
I love vray like it is , but my dream (for a wishlist)on it include distribute gi on net pc, faster glossy reflection/refraction and less memory consumption for photn mapped detailed solution
Hi pengo, In my tests (1 u = 1 cm scale) I could go up to 5 without any noticeable difference in quality, but the photon map went from about 400 MB to 20 MB. Your scenes may be different though, and maybe this doesn't work for all scenes.
