  • Glossy in GLOSSY!

Hi. Resently I've discovered one sad fact about glossies, and decided to write about it here immediately. I had a situation when the scene was full of objects with glossy reflection. Of course I understand that rendering of blurred reflection (refraction) is probably the most difficult task, but maan, the rendertime was EXTREMLY huge, inspite of very low glossy subdivs - 4 or even 3. I have come to conclusion, that Vray needs optimisation in the case, when glossy object sees another glossy objects. Currently it renders true glossy reflection for all subreflections in every objects, and this leads to ENORMOUS rendertimes. But hey! Since the reflection is BLURRED, we don't care what is beyond the first reflected bounce - another glossy reflection or sharp one. It becomes blurred anyway. So, please consider this one, since I'm sure FinalRender had this option from stage-0.

And yes, almost forgot. When Vray calculates IrMap prepasses, does it consider glossiness or not? I think it should NOT. Or maybe only one subdiv would be enough.

    Thanx.

yeah, I fully agree w/ you about glossies in glossies...it just happened to me on the last project I was on......a set of glossy semi transparent glass/stainless and similar were set next to each other and rendering times went through the roof....were huge
plus I was getting black sploches on the glossy stainless........I had to uncheck "raytrace reflections" in the stainless to get back to somewhat normal rendertimes and get rid of the sploches....

so yeah, I hope for some optimization in that respect,

    paul.

Could be I have misunderstood what youre talking about, but I believe that lowering the bounces to 1 or 2 in the reflection spinner would stop glossies from inter-reflecting too much.

and i also assume he is talking about normal glossies and not interpolated glossies

              hmm...I don't get it...

[quote]and i also assume he is talking about normal glossies and not interpolated glossies[quote]
...actually I don't see what this has to do with his question either. Same applies to interpolated and non-interpolated.

Am I missing something here? I'm feeling very confused as to these replies.(How does one double-quote?)
