  • Chromatic Abberation Pass and Triplanar mapping 3ds max

    Hey Guys,

I am seeing frequently a lot of artists using chromatic abberation to add a bit more realism to their renders, however it seems to get overdone and can ruin a nice render/final piece.

This is usually a post effect added in an external program like photoshop, however I thought it may be interesting if we had a chromatic abberation pass.

Our Physical camera is of course a physical camera, but it would be pretty cool to have CORRECT CA as an option maybe or as a separate pass for us to comp into our final images.

Is this something that could be achieved, maybe even an option to tick or even a slider for how much can added to the image?

Since you implemented the triplanar mapping option in the flakes for carpaint and seperate flake material, I have been wondering if it would ever be possible to implement triplanar into vraymaterials.

I know standard practice is to uv map everything but when on a tight deadline boxmapping has had to be resorted to, as you know this can sometimes yeild unsatisfactory results on complext objects. It may not be doable but I was just wondering if it can be done for the vray material?

Interesting idea, but what exactly would correct Chromatic Aberration be?

As it exists in the real world, CA is a result of a lens' manufacturing - the number of lens elements, coatings, etc.

If using the same camera body, the characteristics of CA in an image will vary widely from one lens to another.

      Exactly!

Considering we can load camera profiles or maybe like other renderers we could have a load of preset camera profiles then it would be able (with a bit of camera knowledge) get the correct amount of CA that one would desire!

Grant Warwick achieved a fair bit of CA during rendering using a custom bokeh map consisting of 3 RGB circles intersecting (making white in the center) with a bit of a flare in the middle.

          Where did he do this?

On the forum or his courses?

Indeed, the vegetation lesson. He's not exactly elaborating this, but basically, using this technique, you can achieve some sort of CA where the focus is off. The more blur the more CA according to Grant so not exactly like the "more CA away from the center of the lens" theory.

I guess I am missing a lot on Grant's course. I haven't gotten any emails and nobody is talking about it here. His page seems to be dead (http://www.grantwarwick.net/)

You had an account already you mean? I think when he changed servers/upgraded the site, login details were reset. You might need to email him.
