  • Vrayproxy subdivide at render time

Is it possible to add an option to subdivide vrayproxy meshes at rendertime? Similar to turbosmooth.

If you use Alembic files, there is an option to use OpenSubdiv at render time.

For .vrmesh files we don't have such an option though; because the proxy is split into voxels, connectivity information between polygons is lost and it's not possible to subdivide very well.

Alternatively, you can use the "Show full mesh" option of the proxy and apply regular TurboSmooth - not sure it will work quite well but you can try.

On the other hand, one of our developers is working on a LOD support where a single .vrmesh file can include multiple subdivision levels of an object (f.e. exported from Mudbox) and V-Ray will choose to load the correct LOD based distance from the camera.

I'm using alembic files from houdini. I suppose you're talking about the "Subdivide all meshes" on the alembic mesh tab. I don't see the option to activate at render time.

Also if i turn it on the first time, it smooths the mesh out, and if i deactivate and activate again it crashes max constantly.

Turbosmooth is working fine right now using the "Off in viewport" option.

Hm, it was supposed to work only at render time - are you saying it subdivides in the viewport too? If yes, we'll need to fix it.

        Well, at least something works

Yes it subdivides in the viewport and crashes constantly when on/off/on.

By the way, vraydirt isn't working with vrayproxy... Standard Vraydirt renders black.

Annnnndddd Turbosmooth bugs out when network rendering, simply doesn't render the proxy. "Subdivide meshes" for now works.

Works fine for me on a simple test. If you have a scene where it doesn't, best to post here or to support@chaosgroup.com
