Thanks Recon for your answer, it actually looks better with vray in my opinion. I found that is provably more versatil the vray environment fog in the case I want to create clouds using a geometry as a gizmo, but I'm actually looking for something that lets you work with volumes and dig them (with procedurals for ex), and VDB for now seems to be the better approach. Im using vray volume grid to run some test but I'm having some resolution issues (grid artifacts), but for now is the best option inside max to turn meshes into a volume.

Yep. I did some tests of my own using V-Ray Env fog mapped with some 3D procedurals, and results were indeed looking great, even though it wasn't very fast. If you are after realistic clouds, then 3D procedural mapped volume is always better choice. I was just pointing out that Vlado is right. What's used in that tutorial is indeed equivalent of VrayScatterVolume material

Yes, I thought at first glance that Corona shader was capable to do the same as the vray environment fog but just because I never tried vrayvolumescatter mat before. By the way, run some test with the vrayvolumegrid if you haven't yet, I think us faster than the env fog.
        Cheers

I tried recreating those Corona clouds in VRay, and while the VRayScatterVolume material gives a result close to Corona's shader, I can't recreate the detail displacement achieved by the CoronaDisplacementMod with VRay's own displacement modifier. I keep getting black artifact of overlapping geometry in the volume, while Corona's displacement renders absolutely clean. Am I doing anything wrong?

The problem is not in the displacement as such, more in the fact that there are intersecting portions of the mesh. Feel free to post a scene so that we can check it out.

            Best regards,

It happen to me too, but yes, it seems to be that some faces are crossing so they become black or darker

its funny cause i had a personal project wich i had to render clouds for these days. here is the result with vray environment fog.

try'd with volumeMtl first, but missed the gizmo falloff, wich helps a lot for such things like clouds imo. would be great to have it in VolumeMTL too if it make sense.

that must have taken a fair while to render ? getting that kind of density and detail in the env fog has always caused me issues.

eh. thx lele. but just followed the corona video for modelling the clouds to be honest.

It looks really nice, but I think the render time is a bit high, isn't? it was rendered at full HD? and those spots are post effect or is noise from the render? Thanks for sharing!

i don't gave too much on rendertime here cause i only needed 1 frame and it cooked over night. But i will try to speed it up and render a sequenze over weekend.
                              spots are done in post

so here short movement. about 14 min. per frame. some flickering though. but i bet lele would get 3min. per frame out of it without flickering at all.
