  • Quick Holdout button

    Hi All
sorry but I love imagining new features.

I wish that there was a shiny new button that came with V-Ray that lived on the shelf. You select and object - almost always a ground plane, and click the Quick holdout button.

It automatically makes the ground invisible in render but has shadows from objects on it.

I've followed many tutorials and never been able to produce a correct holdout. My ground planes are always black with funny looking shadows. This button would make that processes simple for the simple minded.

    Thanks.

Thank you Vlado - I try to think of many ideas and usually 1 or 2 are good.

I sat down for weeks making a huge suggestion to the Developer of HairFarm and heaps of my suggestions are being taken on board. I love that so much, when a developer take they time to listen, soooo coool. Thank you Vlado. Ill always try to think of new and helpful suggestions.

+1 for this. Although I know how to do it I think there are too many buttons to push to get what you are looking for (matte approach, setting is as matte, alpha contrib, etc, turning off GI/reflections etc on the groundplane...)
            Software:
            Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
            3ds Max 2016 SP4
            V-Ray Adv 3.60.04

            Hardware:
            Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (4096MB RAM)
            64GB RAM

Maybe a button that could be placed inside the vray toolbar?

One click shadow catchers would be a godsend.

                    Here.
As the toolbar icon(s?) are done it'll be transferred there.

For now, select as you please (the script filters the selection for you), and click either "make ShadowCatcher" or "Return to Normal".
Running the same code twice on objects has no adverse effect.

As usual, please report any bugs.

On a unrelated side note, this is infuriating in Max 2017. Is it a Max UI issue or a Vray issue?

                          I take it works? ^^

As for the display issue, i would think it's a video driver problem, but i honestly don't know for sure.
Maybe try and change max's own video drivers to dx9 (from nitrous) and see if it goes away.

Yes it works great, thanks. Am I right in assuming it only works for Adv and not RT (3.5 beta).

And sorry I was talking about the checkboxes being so horribly misaligned and not the big black box - that was me hiding stuff lazily in paint.

Ah, i guess it may be made better, perhaps.
The move of Max to QT has made perfectly fine code behave oddily, at times.

I don't see why the script shouldn't work for GPU, they use the same exact object/V-Ray properties.
Do let me know should you find issues with it, though.
