  • VRayCamera Foreground/Background Image Planes

It is silly that this is not built into all 3D cameras in all applications. Everyone uses them and they're always useful. However in max you have to do silly work around to get things to be useful for this simple technique. Since the VRay camera is so robust, I thought it would be awesome to be able to map a foreground and background image to the camera, perhaps as an add to the misc. rollout.

One way to implement would be to map the clipping planes. Another could be to just add new parameters. Would be great if image planes didn't turn grey when camera is frozen.

Would be nice, probably wouldn't even be hard to do for your team.

Thanks for all the hard work guys!

I have never heard of such a thing myself. Perhaps you would find this useful http://fagmario.com/site/?page_id=461

I use them for reference when modeling or when placing items. The annoyance is that if you use an actual image plane, it can in the way of modeling because it is actual geometry. And then if you switch to wire frame mode, you can't see your reference plane, which is stupid. Should be a simple camera trick, like "viewport background" should be... but that is crap too.

When using image planes, you use back face culling, that stops them being a pain and getting in the way of your modelling. Countels people use them to model stuff, using reference images or blueprints and you are the very first person to mention this as such a problem. and talking of switching to wireframe how about switching to shaded mode when modelling and using that old transparent material trick, where you animate the transparency, so if you need to see behind an object, you just move the time slider and it fade out the geometry, making the image plane visible. Also when modelling using image planes right left, top etc, surely they should remain static, locked in place and attaching image planes to a camera, means the extra job of locking the camera in place to prevent them moving.. Since peole have been using image planes this way for decades, I really don't see any logic to adding this feature... Also did you check out that free script I mentioned
