  • Expand on "global switches" concept

I like the addition of the global switches section.

I'd like to see it expanded to include other switches that already exist elsewhere. It would make more sense to me (as well as being more convenient) if caustics, DR, and other similar on/off switches be moved to the global rollout.

I think you should be more specific about what switched to be moved, no one is going to go guessing.

Not intending for anyone to guess. I was specific about the ones I had in mind: caustics and DR

I merely said "other similar switches" to cover any other on/off switches in a future release, or in the current version that I am not thinking of.

why would yo uput the on off switch for caustics in the global area. then you would need to goto the caustics are and the global area to use caustics. leave something like that in the caustics section where it belongs so you dont need to go looking for it when you wanna turn caustics on.

I don't know, I like his idea. It's nice to have all the switches in one location. You could move the caustics switches to the top & still have the rollout with all the settings for it. And it would be so nice to have DR at the top with everything else. I turn it off & on all the time when I'm doing quick tests & region renders.

You could also move the GI switch to the top.

Exactly. Typically, I tweak my settings a few times, then I'm all set for now. Next I'll test lighting, materials, etc. by doing quick test renders. For these I switch off things like DR, caustics, hdri, etc. to get a fast idea where things stand. Once I have something I think will work, I'll switch them back on and test. If I need to fiddle with caustics settings, I can head back down to that rollout. But if I'm doing tests, I don't want to have to open several different rollouts just to turn things off or on.

I don't agree. We have shortcuts for other options that could be disabled in other places too. The difference here is that there's just "one button" but i still think the workflow would be a little bit more polished (especially with other switches that make things a little faster to overview. I think a Button in the Globals should just behave as an instance of the button in the caustics options. Same with DR. It's two small Buttons in the globals that make life easier when doing certain tasks (esp. in the case of DR)
So, yes, count my vote for that.

No reason the buttons couldn't be in both places as long as they were tied together
