  • vray proxy not working in blender 4.3

    hi there,

I am experementing with the vray proxy workflow.

the documentation here seems to imply that an alembic can be imported to vray proxy:

    https://docs.chaos.com/display/VBLD/V-Ray+Proxy

But when I try, I receive an error and nothing imports. "failed to read .vrmesh file. Indicating that .abc cannot be read after all?

So I tried converting to vrmesh file and importing via adding a new vray proxy, only to receive the same error, failed to read .vrmesh file.

I tried blender 4.2, it seems it can read the .vrmesh file at least. Not alembic. But in this case I do not have any options for vr proxy under the data tab in blender, and the alembic I created does not animated as I expected.

I was intending to just import a cloth sim I created in an external app as .abc and render with vray blender. But I get no animation when I render a imported .abc. So if there is any workaround I am listening!

    Thanks!

Hi Leo, I’ve tested the import of .abc and .vrmesh files using the latest release build for Blender 4.3, but I couldn’t reproduce the issue on my end.

Could you provide a screenshot of the console showing the error message you encountered during the import? Additionally, if possible, attaching the problematic Alembic file would be greatly appreciated.

        Hi Leo,

Thanks for the detailed info. The problem you are facing is that the add-on cannot find one of the tools that it needs in order to perform the import, which might be if the addon was installed in a non-standard location. We know about the issue and it has already been fixed but the fix hasn't been published yet.

BTW, support for animated alembics is on our development schedule but still not available.

Oh so even if I could import it, it would not animate? Are you aware of any other way to import animated to geo that will render?

            Unfortunately, not at the moment.

Hello leo_beall , I'm just writing to inform you that our development team has now implemented support for animated Alembics (.abc) and V-Ray proxies (.vrmesh). Currently, the animation cannot be previewed inside Interactive or Solid shading views, but it will render correctly when performing a production render. You should expect to see this in a future release.

But this could mean that we can also create vrayproxies within Blender?

Hi bardo, currently, the ability to export geometry from Blender to .vrmesh is not available. I've already raised this with our development team, and they are looking into providing that functionality in the future.
