  • Tuorial about realistic cloudy fog

    Hi out there,

does anybody knows a good tuorial about realistic cloudy fog. If you compare fog possibilities with U-Render it is unbelievable, how long it takes to get good result - I even have none.

    Cheers
    Tobias

You can put a noise inside the environment fog and it will be perfect for this task, if you can show an image of what you need it will be easier to help.

I want to create a noisy groundfog, like preseting something on a stage.

      Cheers

I suggest you to study the documentation to understand all the settings. Here are a couple examples, you can choose other noises and tune every detail:

Thank you both for your fast response. Yes, both are great. I will try to use your settings. Somebody in the forum wrote to change the fog color, not density. Hope the rendertimes are ok.

            Thanks and cheers

My tests took a few seconds on an 8core machine, don’t forget to tune the step size and if needed add a fade out.

Ok, you have to turn of GPU-rendering, then you can use raymarching, and then the rendertimes are ok.

I don't know how you guys are working with the fog and IPR. Any time I add noise to any of the density/transparency/colour channels, the IPR just freezes up for about 5+ minutes, sometimes longer (fadeout just chews on it forever). I've wasted hours trying to experiment with different noises and it's just unworkable for production. It's not like I've got a slow machine either – it's a maxed out 2019 Macbook Pro:

We've got new Mac Studios being built this week, so it'll be interesting seeing how those fare.

                    Hello KernitTheFont,

Does this freeze only occur when tweaking the fog parameters? Is it only the interactive rendering that is freezing? Can you interact with Cinema4D's UI during the freeze? Also, can you specify the exact versions of V-Ray and Cinema4D that you have installed? Thank you.

                      Hi aleksandar.kasabov

Does this freeze only occur when tweaking the fog parameters?
Yes, just when I've added noise to the channels. Changing the fadeout values is even worse. I tried adding the noise to a Vray Bake texture, set to 8bit greyscale float, but that didn't help.

Is it only the interactive rendering that is freezing?
Yes, just super blocky for anything from 15seconds to 1minute with 'Preparing Ray Server' constantly in the IPR. If I move the camera, same problem.

Can you interact with Cinema4D's UI during the freeze?
                      Yes, works as expected.

Also, can you specify the exact versions of V-Ray and Cinema4D that you have installed?
                      I'm on r25.117 and Vray 5.20.05

It does seem a bit faster this morning, from a cold machine. Am I just being impatient? Here's the file: https://tandp.egnyte.com/dl/9mre8iD1wg

KernitTheFont , would you please try to use a higher Step Size value and see your the setup behaves on your system?
Btw value of a 1 cm for such a big volume and camera distance/position doesn't seem necessary

Yunal, you are an absolute legend! I've only just started trying to use fog in a scene and I didn't even think about the step size. I just left it at default. I'm experimenting for a misty environment in another big scene, so this info is invaluable.
                          Thanks so much!

Haha Don't know about that, but happy to help!

I just left it at default
this might be a good pointer for us to revisit some defaults, thanks!
