  • vray gpu mode experiences know-how

    Hi All!

Currently we are testing if v-ray gpu rendering could be a good fit for our pipeline. I know that it's mostly a one-click solution, but while testing a few scenes we noticed a lot of differences, with, bump maps, blend materials, coat and refractive materials. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with v-ray gpu rendering in production. And if anyone knows about some documentation that addresses the differences between the cpu and gpu mode it would be highly appreciated. I only found older and brief writings on the chaos docs sites.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi akos_kiss Thank you for your interest in implementing V-Ray GPU into your pipeline!

While some differences are expected as rendering on CPU and on GPU is to be understood as rendering with different render engines we would appetite if you could share with us a list of your discoveries so we can discuss and investigate them further.

Meanwhile, you could take a look at some of the Supported and Unsupported features here: LINK

Please, do let me know if there's anything specific we could assist you with.

@ akos_kiss We use V-ray GPU in production for rendering speed. In my experience It's best to start the project from the start using V-ray GPU. That way the results will work as expected with Materials. If you started the project in CPU, then use CPU mode unless you want to modify materials for that project to get the look you are after. Most of the features are supported now for GPU. I have run into a few projects where I needed to use CPU mode because a feature was missing.

        Hi akos_kiss !
As my colleague Viktor suggested, V-Ray and V-Ray GPU are different engines and will produce slightly different outputs. It is best to start your projects with V-Ray GPU early on.
If you have other questions about V-Ray GPU or the workflow, let us know.

        Best,
        Muhammed
