Symmetry Object problems

Am I the only one to whom elements don't render if they have the same name within a Symmetry Object.

The issue is know. See the link. I'm avoiding to use the symmetry object. Usually I make an instance and scale it to -1.

Same here, the render instance option is also more efficient for both viewport and RAM usage so I do that regardless of the symmetry issue.

Does it not cause normal flipping (bumps on the wrong side etc.)?

No, at least in render instance mode the normals are fine.

As klex167 already mentioned above, this is a known issue (bug ID: VC4D-976), that has already been reported in our system. I made sure to also mention this thread and I will let you know once we have any updates on the matter. Thank you.
