how can you work with absolute paths? ... projects would have to be at the same place all the time, if not they break... this is not really an option.
@nunomatos : which c4d version do you use? newer ones have an indexing system for assets i think....

index we use dropbox so we have all the paths the same... don't know how to work on server but i think you can virtualize the same path (i'm not pro on windows
we still using R23 because we don't have yet some plugins working on R25 ... but i heard that yes... R24 and new have a better system... in any case is really stupid that C4D needs to "search" on paths we put in c4d preferences...

        Dear chaos support,

unfortunately, we still experience huge problems with the preview speed of classic vray materials using C4D R23 and Vray 5.20.06 (the problem persists with C4D 26 and Vray6 beta).
I also tried what nunomatos suggested (absolute texture paths and no search path) but this did not help in our case. I feel that the previews are not really faster than in Vray 5.10.24 when I originally encountered the problem.

Simple scenes with few materials are ok to work with, but when adding more materials to a scene, the previews take longer and longer to render and block the responsiveness of C4D increasingly.
I am working on a scene with 200+ materials, some use high-res textures but most are pretty basic.

However, node materials in the same scene preview fast and fluent and do not block Cinema4d, as I would expect it.

I have uploaded the scene with textures here so you may have a look at it.

Any help on this is very appreciated as it is really painful to work like that.
        Thanks in advance.

I would like to report that we experianced similar issues recently both with the standard vray material and the node materials. After a while the node materials became really slow to update.
I noticed that parallel to this when I'm searching for a node in the node editor its loading really slow. for example when i typ in "color" it takes a good few seconds to show me the color noder. I Don't know if this is a maxon issue or a vray issue though...
