  • Multi matte, material id and blend material mask are not working

We ran into a serious problem regarding the multi matte workflow in vray 5.2
I couldn't figure how to make the matte and mask workflow we had in vray 3.7 to work in vray 5.

These are the issues with render masks that make it difficult to work with
    1. Material stacking ignores material id. stacked materials are not visible in multi matte RE
    2. Blend materials are also not visible in multi matte RE
    3. Select object RE also ignores multi matte
So basically this means that i can only use one material/ object? We use a bunch of blend materials for our work and having working multi matte elements with these is crucial.
Am I missing something or is this a known issue?

    Hello akos_kiss,

This issue has already been reported and discussed in this thread. This is reported to our developers for fixing (bug ID: VC4D-1210) and I will let you know about its progress.

    3. Select object RE also ignores multi matte
Could you please elaborate some more on that? What are you trying to achieve with the Object Select RE and the Multimatte RE? Sharing a test scene or some screenshots to demonstrate the issue would be helpful. Thank you.

      Hi aleksandar.kasabov,

Thank you for the heads up! This is a really important issue IMO. I hope when fixed, it will be a hotfix update because This is a really important production feature. Until that i will check the nightly builds

About the Select object RE. I was searching for a workaround and checking if maybe select object in material id mode would solve this issue.

          Hi aleksandar.kasabov,

I just wanted to ask if there was any update regarding the blend or stacked materials masks? I've been testing vray 6 but i could make it work.

              Hello aleksandar.kasabov,

Thank you for the update! I feel like it is really important to have separate render elements, mattes for blend materials and stacked materials. For the past 2 years there was no way to render these mattes from vray. We hade to render them separately from c4d standard renderer all the time.

This is really a must have feature for anyone who does product visualizations. These matte are the only way to have complete control over the renders in post. If this feature was available with the cryptomatte re it would be great but only the top level materials are considered there.
