  • Enableing lights in object manager crashes c4d

    Hi!

I've been having an issue lately. Sometimes when i turn on or off vray lights in object manager with the tick it crashes c4d for some reason. If i use the enable= disable tick box on the lights general tab it works fine all the time. It also works fine if I use the traffic lights to hide the light. Is this a know issue?

I think i already asked if there was a way to link the object manager tick with the general tabs enable disable switch. It feels redundant. Is there a reason this feature is doubled? From the top of my head i can't think of a situation this would be usefull. Especially since the object manager tick doesn't disable the light object in the viewport.

I use vray 5.20.06. and c4d r25 with all the latest updates.

    Hello akos_kiss,

Have you noticed if the crash occurs when you perform a specific task or does it happen at random? Can you please specify the exact versions of V-Ray, Cinema4D, and your OS? Please check the _bugreports folder in your preferences folder, and if present, share the bugreport with us. Also, please generate a dump file for the crash and send it to us. Please check this article for more information on how to create the dump file.

This has already been discussed in this thread. The reason to have an "Enabled" option in the attributes manager is to allow animating whether the light is enabled or disabled.

      Hi aleksandar.kasabov!

Sorry for the late reply but it ahs been a busy month. So i think i figured out the issue. But TBH its a bit strange but it works most of the time. And by "it works" i mean it crashed c4d all the time

So if i have a scene with a few simple but high poly objects. For example a high polycount cube or sphere and i have a bunch of lights (like 10). If i have the IPR running and i try to enable the lights too fast. The IR guts stuck at preparing ray server. And c4d hangs and crashes or i have to close the app manually.

This is interesting because, if i use the light lister and switch on the lights there ( with the enable checkbox) i get the same result as if i try t switch them on with the c4d object checkmark.
I also have this issue if i use the "trafic light" to make the lights not visible in the viewport or render.

It is really strange. It feels like when I'm enableing the lights too fast the crashes some part of the ipr-s update process.

        Hello akos_kiss,

Upon testing on my end I was not able to reproduce the crash. Are you still using V-Ray 5.20.06 or V-Ray 6? Can you share more details about your system (CPU, GPU, GPU Driver, RAM, OS, etc.)? Also, sharing a video recording of the crash would be very helpful. Thank you.

          Hello aleksandar.kasabov ,

I will record a video of the situation and attach a simple scene file! This is under vray 6 under cpu rendering (threadripper 3970x, rtx 3080, 256gb ram, win 10 latest updates).

            Hello akos_kiss,

Thank you for the info. Please send me the requested details when you have the chance so we can investigate further. Also, please send us a dump file

Can you also check the _bugreports folder in your Cinema4D preferences folder (you can access it by going to Edit> Preferences> Open Preferences Folder) and send me the contents of the folder?

Please also provide us with a dump file from the crash. You can find instructions on how to collect this here. Thank you.

                Hi aleksandar.kasabov

Sorry for not posting a test scene but we were testing if this issue is was only with one machine. We had this issue with both most of our windows machines (similar builds to the one mentioned above) and on mac os (mac pro and m1 mac too). When tweaking the light settings with the ipr on vray totaly randomly crashes. Most of the time it was when we turned on/off a light using the tick on the vray light object. But on mac os the scene files just crashed when tweaking different settings. I noticed a bug fix id in the latest nightly build release notes that described a similar issue.

V-Ray: Crash when tweaking lights during interactive rendering and LightMix enabled; (VC4D-1605)

                Is this the same issue?

                  Hello akos_kiss,

It is quite possible that your issue is the same and this is why I asked you for a dump file. As this issue (bug ID: VC4D-1605) has been fixed, could you please download and install the latest stable build (from here) and let me know if you still experience the crash? Thank you.
