  • Scatterable hedges

Im sure this has been asked before but might be relevant now that Vray 6 has Scatter. No more SurfaceSpread, as good as it was.

I am really struggling to find a scatterable hedge solution that works out of the box. Whatever I seem to try I always get a repeating pattern in the hedge, even with random rotate, scale, height etc. Phtotshop clone stamp sorts it out post production but I feel I shouldn't have to retouch a hedge this way on every render.

The other issue is with materials being compatible with Vray6. All my old models (HQ trees, Vizpark plants etc) dont load the materials correctly even with Vray6 material converter. I have trialed new packages (Evermotion) but the same issue. It was mentioned that Vray3.x materials are not fully compatible with Vray6.x. Simple materials are not a problem but 2sided materials for foliage seem a real issue.

Any thoughts, suggestions, work arounds etc?

I usually do like this, I scatter a square 60x60cm hedge module across a spline using a standard C4D cloner, then I rotate the modules with steps of 90º so that nearby modules do not show the same face, then I randomize a tiny bit the rotation, the scale, and the position. You may still get the same face from time to time but usually is barely noticeable. Here you can see an example: https://forums.chaos.com/forum/chaos...her-pool-villa The hedge module is from my Vray5 modern pool villa scene: https://forums.chaos.com/forum/v-ray...la-scene-3drnb
Please notice that now that we have Chaos native scatter tool this technique may no longer be needed, but I still have to try it, I’ll test a new setup in the next few days.

I confirm that with the Scatter tool is much easier, I'll post a video later

Really like the villa renders, especially the lighting. Get that right and everything else falls into place.

I have just made the long overdue upgrade from C4D R18 with Vray 3.4 to C4D 2023 with Vray 6. Massive learning curve as everything has moved on so much. The biggest issue I am coming up against is that so many of my current materials are no longer useable. I invested years ago in HQ Trees and plants as well as Vizpark shrubs and grass etc and so far there is no sign of the creators updating their materials. It was mentioned that Vray 3.x materials are not compatible with Vray 6. Vray 6 has a material converter but it doesnt really work that well. A lot of my basic materials for brick, wood, metal etc are not a problem, its the 2sided materials used for foliage that are the real issue for me at the moment.

Who do you use for the hedge models? I have tried a couple and regardless of the material issues I dont get what I consider to be a good varied spread of leaves, such the hedges in your render. The green landscaping I have to follow is quite specific such as hedge height and width.

Simple Chaos Scatter is more than enough. Scatter branches/twigs on something procedural like mesh made from spline so it's easy to edit.
