  • [HOU-2387] Particle Render - Extremely Slow -

I'm doing some tests/r&d to render particles 20 Mil > and more with Vray and I also tried other renders like RS, Arnold, 3Delight, and Vray was the worst to render points/particles with motion blur enabled. Attached is the .hip - It must something wrong I can not believe that Vray takes soooo long to render just points. I tried to render in Cuda as well but it failed sometimes and it was not stable.
This test is around 18 mil.

    Redshift GPU - 22 sec

    Arnold CPU - 50 sec

    Vray CPU - 35 Min
    Vray CUDA/GPU - 2 min

Interesting - played with your file and I had the same experience .
Tried 3DLight - 55 sec, but slower machine

So I think, this must be a bug or a configuration problem. Hope the Chaosgroup guys will look into that.

What kind of shader? As far as I know, the many points with volume shader workflow is not there in V-Ray yet, unfortunately. And it's very important for our VFX use case.

Is simple Vray material as you can see. If you want to see how long it takes on your side please do so. I attached the HIP File

Thank You! - I hope this gets fixed soon. I would like to use Vray for this.

Hi Developers, any word on this? Someone was testing the same scene in 4.3 I believe it was and they said that pts render super fast? so it might be an issue with vray 5 IM guessing? Just wondering how is the progress? I try to render again a week ago with the latest nightly and I got the same result.

                Thank you!

Yes, one of our developers is currently looking into this.

                  Best regards,
                  Vlado

I can say for sure that they are not faster in 4.3. In fact rendering many points in vray has always been on the slow side (at least what I know from using maya - in houdini I always use mantra for that). Would be really great to see this render with speeds comparable with other engines.

Adding up to this - many points renders are very important for our work - rain, snow, dirt, debris, foam, energy effects - and it would be great to have that improved. Besides the peformance, the other missing pieces are a pscale shader, delayed load geometry shader, and point volume shading.

                        Good feature list, Hristo
Yes, a fast and flexible points rendering is needed by many of my trainings clients.

I'm bumping this one again, but I would really like to know what's going on with this request.
                            Thanks

                              Hi,

it appears that particles are rendering A LOT faster now. Very nice!

Kudos to the developer looking into this!
