  • GPU compiling kernels

    Hey guys,

just downloaded the latest nightly build ffor Windows (5476 hash: d275625 from 18 Oct 2019 04:15), did a quick test, attached scene rendered with CPU.

CPU renders fine, but GPU refuses to bucket render or start IPR. IPR status bar says "Compiling kernels for device GeForce GTX 1080ti" twice and then stops. I did find and error message in the console: "FH [Warning] V-Ray: initDevices() failed. Please check that your system has compatible GPU devices installed."

Tried to narrow down the issue and turns out it's the texture file (JPG/PNG) used for the display that causes the issue, removed the texture file and rendered fine with GPU as well. Additionally it renders perfect with the latest stable build, so it looks like it's only a nightly issue, but kinda strange for sure.

    Houdini 17.5.360, Windows 10, AMD 2950X and 4x1080ti.

Let me know what you think!

    Chris.

    What's the driver version?

    > turns out it's the texture file (JPG/PNG) used for the display

    What does this mean?

Could you also send to alexander.soklev@chaosgroup.com the vraylog.txt file located in %temp% after the issue. It would help us in the investigation what's going on.

Regarding the log file - you need to add a couple of environment variables to generate it.

        1. Open the hfs.bat file used to start Houdini (or the houdini.env file in the Documents folder in case you're using that)
        2. Add the following variables:
        set VRAY_FOR_HOUDINI_LOG_FILE_PATH=D:\
        set VRAY_FOR_HOUDINI_LOG_FILE_NAME=vfh.txt

When you start Houdini, the log will be written in D:\vfh.txt

bdancer see attached, absolute basic tex setup. Scene renders fine with GPU if you remove the ImageFile node. Let me know if you need the scene file, nothing secret in there.
Nvidia Driver 436.48, also tried rolling back a version, did not help.

a7az0th will do later today, based on Gosho.Genchev's notes.

          Thanks guys, you rock!

          Chris.

miro.digital, so will it crash with any texture file? Or only with specific one? Png,jpg, exr, tiff?

Any texture connected stops GPU IPR/GPU render working. It doesn't really crash, stops only.
Attached the log file I sent to Alexander, hope that helps!
