  • (fixed) [HOU-3585] machine responsiveness during interactive rendering

We just upgraded some workstations to 64 core threadripper pro and while production (bucket) rendering, the machines get extremely none responsive (you basically have to wait for it to finish rendering to be able to use it again). This is not as much the case for ipr nore is it the case in maya vray. The problem can be reduced by lowering the threads used but not by enabling "low thread priority". This was not necessary on the previous intel machines (which also had around 40 cores).

When testing it in maya, the machines' responsivness is also reduced but one can at least move other windows around. it gets a little better there when enabling "low thread priority". This lets me assume that it might be a houdini vray specific issue. happens in both vray5 and 6.

    Dear ronald_a, hello.

Thank you for sharing these observations.
We have investigated similar complaints about Production rendering, it will be highly appreciated to clear out - the title is mentioning V-Ray Interactive, but the text itself is about Production.
That way we could split the suspicions - could it be related or not.

This is the thread about V-Ray for Maya, please take a look.
The issue (again for Production rendering) was reported here about V-Ray for Cinema 4D and was solved in V-Ray 6 for Cinema 4D latest stables - officially released on Tuesday.

You have declared it about AMD, and yes - the received information till now confirms that.
Most of the customers are using similar configurations. Some of them are on Intel too, there is variety.
So, there is pretty much in common.

About the V-Ray 5/6 thing - yes, the tests with V-Ray for Cinema 4D have shown that work with later versions of V-Ray 5 and newer - V-Ray 6 is resulting in a possible system lag on some configurations.
For this successful previous investigation about V-Ray for Cinema 4D we have used a Google Form to receive helpful data.
I will send it to you now via PM. Please fill it in and we will continue troubleshooting. Thanks in advance.

    Best regards,
    TS

      Dear tsvetomira.girginova,

thank you for your reply. Sorry for the confusion in the title. what it should have said is gui rendering (in contrast to comandline/vray standalone). form filled out, example scene sent. It seems that this issue has been solved for c4d so I hope the same change can help here. I also hope, that this also finds its way into vray5 because this our production version for now.
