  • (open)[HOU-3773]Instance lights to points - scale attribute is not taken into account

    hi,
copy a vray light with the instance node to points with scale attribute on it, does not take the scale attribute into account while rendering.

The viewport shows it correct with the scale applied though.

This did work in vray 5. Is there a new way to do it in vray 6?

hi chakarov, thank you for the scene. It works also with a v@pscale attribute for non proportional lights which is important for us.
      Thanks again.

        hi chakarov,

Unfortunately I was a little bit quick with the pscale attribute and noticed a strange behavior.

Until now we controled the lights with the "scale" attribute which has 3 components. So we could shape the proportions of the lights. Now with the pscale this is a little bit cumbersome.

You see if we use pscale as a vector (what maybe does not make sense but apparently its the only working attribute for the light size at the moment?) and change the x component it also has effect to the y component.

To only scale lights randomly or scale them proportional is not what we want. We need control for the x and y.

Switching the control for the lights from scale to pscale makes a lot of our scenes to not work anymore and it would be nice if you can help us with a quick solution. We would prefer to stay with vray6 rather than switching back to vray5 because of that.

Do you have an idea ?

I attached your scene with this modification.

        kind regards and thank you
        Jon

Hi Jon3D , you are right, v@scale seems to be ignored after 8.august . I've reported the issue in our system and set its priority to "major" . Will write you here once it is fixed.

chakarov Could you please take another look at this? It seems to be functioning properly with one point, but when there are two or more, it behaves erratically. The orientation is off, and the lights are no longer visible. If it's possible, I would greatly appreciate a speedy resolution. Thank you.

Feel free to use this scene file if it's helpful. It appears to only work with the first point and ignores the rest.

thank you for providing the scene. After reviewing it, I have identified that the issue arises when using a rotated light. Rotating the light can cause unexpected behavior with the first light and it will be ignored by the others. That was the problem in my example scene. I changed your scene by using four lights with the N attribute. As you can see in the image it only effects one light.

Thats good to know and a workaround for now but, changing the rotation of the lights can be a quick method to alter the direction of the lights (as it was possible before) instead of modifying the normals. I think it would be worth looking at this again. I believe it does not work as intended?

Hi Jon3D , you are right, transformation of the light is ignored. I've logged the issue into our system.

I think this issue has been there for a while. I came across it a year or so ago, but never got around to providing a sample scene. Nice work Jon3D .

hey Dubbie99 yes maybe, was it vray 5? I frequently used instanced lights with vray 5 and did not encounter any issues.

                              hi,

Can you please have a look at light instancing again?

Transformation of light is still ignored and in the newest nightly even scale attribute seems to be ignored again ?!
