  • OPEN [HOU-4327] Weird Spot light behavior when using Fog

Hi, so I have a scene with a bunch of spotlights and Vray Fog. Some spotlights behave properly and appear as white light cones in the fog whereas some others seem to have some kind of issue as they are black (see screenshot) I have disabled shadows on the spotlights as this was originally causing this problem on all of them.

However now it seems to be an issue with only a few and it is always different spotlights that have this issue when I restart Houdini.

Hello marc_reuter Thank you for reaching out to us!

Please, share with us the exact V-Ray ( V-Ray > About V-Ray ) and Houdini (Help > About Houdini ) versions.
Does it appear in this scene only or it is reproducible in a simple scene as well ?

Please, share with us a scene so we can investigate further. You can do that here or by Submitting a request to our platform.

Hi viktor_angelov Thanks for the quick response. I am using Houdini FX 20.0.506 and Vray 6.20.05 [31923cf8] from Feb. 17 2024.
The problem appears in my scene, when I copy the scene into a new file and also when I recreate the spotlight setup from scatch in a new file.
Would you need the scene as a houdini file or a vrayscene?

After doing some testing it appears the problem is the combination of Spotlights and a Dome light that are affected by the Fog. When I set the Fog to "selected lights" and select all my Spots it works as expected.

Hi marc_reuter Thank you for continuing the investigation. Just the hip file will be fine. No need of vrscene at this point except if the vrscene export is not part of the workflow to recreate the issue.

Please, go to V-Ray > Pack Scene and send us the created folder: https://drive.google.com/uc?id=1JmH2...RnhmFkSuVrgCTE

Hi marc_reuter We tried investigating your file but there seems to be a problem. The file is .hipnc format which means non-commercial. .hip is commercial license. If you start a project in .hipnc you can't continue or open it in commercial and vice versa.

Could you please double-check on your side, save the scene as a .hip / .hiplc and send it over to us.

Additionally, are you by any chance using an educational Houdini license?

Hi viktor_angelov Yes, I am student using an educational license. I am sorry, I did not know of this problem.

Would there be a way for me to share the file in a format you could open?

marc_reuter I got it. Do not worry. I will try reproducing the issue on my side and will let you know if additional assistance is needed.
