  • Vray Proxy and child objects

So a couple of things I'm not sure if they are possible.

    1. I'm trying to create multiple proxies, each one is a group node containing child objects, for example 3 trees, each containing child objects (leaves, branches etc). Now there isn't an option in the exporter that seems to recognize this type of grouping. (see image)

Export all selected objects in a single file : this creates 1 for each child object
Export each selected object in a separate file : this just creates a proxy of each parent or group node.

What i need is export all group/parent nodes as a single file. Is this possible?

    2. Second, i have multiple proxies that share a material set, however because im having to create 1 at a time (see above) , when i bring all the proxies into a scene, it doesnt seem to recognise that they are duplicate materials, and I end up with lots of duplicates, so I have to manually go in and reassign in the proxy shader rollout. Is the anyway or script to make this less painfull?

    Cheers

If you export each selected object in a separate file and you set Automatically create proxy the whole hierocracy will be preserved. If you want to export a group node to a single proxy you will need to export each group separately.

when i bring all the proxies into a scene, it doesnt seem to recognise that they are duplicate materials
At this point, this can only be avoided when Automatically create proxy option is used.

Hi, thanks for response, yeah im not sure if its a vray3.6 thing but even with auto create proxies, if you import one, its lost the connections to the materials

The auto-create option only works when doing the export to proxy. Basically if your geometry objects (that lives in the maya scene) is assigned materials (that live in the maya scene), V-Ray will offload the geometry to disk and re-assign the shaders. You can then save the maya file and reference it (for example).
If you import the proxy (i.e. do Create > V-Ray > Import proxy) regardless of whether the materials live in the maya scene where you import the proxy - you'll need to reassign them yourself, we don't have a way of doing that automatically (but we plan on doing something about it in the future).

        Hope that helps.
