  • Need help from the hivemind - is crashing/bugginess actually reduced in Maya/Vray when using a Quadro card?

Long time Maya user here. I've spent most of that time relying on consumer grade GFX cards, with the occasional low/mid range Quadro. In the last year or so, I've been experiencing near daily crashes in Maya, and on two different machines (1080ti in one, 980ti in the other). It usually occurs when switching between tools, selecting items in the viewport, modifying properties or other things that I feel could be related to the display card. The crash logs don't seem to contain any useful, actionable information.

So my question is simple - any evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, that Quadros reduce crashing/bugginess in Maya? Does Vray prefer one over the other in terms of stability/reliability? I've always seen Quadros as an overpriced marketing gimmick targeting professionals (meaning people with deeper pockets) with mediocre hardware and better quality drivers. Am I wrong? Just trying to solve these crashes by taking a look at every possible cause.

    Thanks!

Been using a Quadro P4000 on PC for 2 years now and not one single issue. Not to say I havent had a Maya crash as I have but this is more to do with very intensive operations.
Today I have a 15.6 million poly .stl file and it has no lag in the viewport.

Quadro all the way in my experience, but I haven't used any other type of card, I stuck with what just works.

Thanks for the info. I definitely haven't had any performance issues with the consumer-grade cards, even when working with huge scenes. It's just the crashes that I'm concerned with, so I don't want to bother with the expense of a Quadro if it's not going to contribute to fewer crashes.

I would be curious to know if any Chaos employees have noticed more crashes (on their end OR in crash reports from customers) being related to the graphics card choice, or if it's a non-factor.
