  • Paint shader mechanical

    Hey guys and gals,

Here for some knowledge again. Looking to see if anyone has some guidance on how to tackle this look for the main paint. Trying to achieve this Sentinel look on the paint and see if I could get some help with the setup. Open to anything. Appreciate the help. Running latest Vray next with maya 2019.

Oh man that's weird. Thank you for the heads up. Here's the look I'm going after.

Oh , that's cool, In short...well you could paint the textures in Photoshop, diffuse and roughness and apply to the model, you can use a mask too and go with a Vray blend material specially to have more control with the metallic shader underneath the paint, you can also do all this perhaps faster in Substance, i'm still doing all my textures in photoshop and slowly using Subsatnace when needed.

          DiMaggio,

I was trying to do this without using Photoshop. Trying to work on my triplanar technique. I already have the raw metal shader built. Wanted to get some guidance on the white paint. I am thinking of using Vray dirt with normal inverted to get the mask I need for the worn out edges of the exposed metal and use a black and white texture to add variance in the mask.

The white paint is what is throwing me off. Not sure how to handle that slight yellowish/white grungy paint.

Use a noise texture or the new bercon noise and some color correct nodes. Proceduraly usually needs a lot more tweaking and controlling nodes .

Could you explain a bit more what you mean? If you have the time and patience jajaja

It would be difficult to explain here, I would need to test it myself but don't have the time and in general I cannot use procedural texturing for work, the bercon noise is found Vray "other textures" and the color correction nodes are in the Maya utility nodes.
Maybe the slight yellowish grunge could be simply painted in Photoshop, so use only one texture to help out and the rest procedurally.

Use curvature and vraydistancetex, and feed the "radius" paramenter with noise or textures. That'll get you realistic chipped edges with enough tweaking.

                      dgruwier,

Thank you for joining the discussion. That sounds like a nice idea. I will try it out as well and see what works best. Might be a little before I post. Have a huge project that consumes majority of my time so by the end of the day, Im spent.
