You need to add some refraction to the material so that the translucency is visible. Note that the fog color will be visible as well, so you may need to tone it with a darker color to see dominant sub-surface scattering in the result; the effect is stored in the refraction render element.

Is there something about this workflow in the Vray Documentation?

I've never found the SSS attributes on the Vray material to be any use, ever. If you want a truly subsurface material, use the SSS shader.

I was hoping that in Vray 5 we get the same feature with the translucency like in 3ds Max. There is a work around in Maya. Do not use the normal VRayMtl use a Vray Plugin node "BRDFVRayMtl" instead (Create -> V-Ray -> Create From V-Ray plugin -> BRDF material.
We are using this for all our plants. I really would like the know the reason why the VRay material is different to the one in 3ds Max, even in VRay 5?

you don’t need use it because in the last beta of VRay 5 you have the new SSS + Thin Walled + 2SidesMtl you can check my test here:

No, it's not yet supported on the GPU. But we're working on it.
