  • Create Vray Plugin Node - Falloff Tex with Light/Shadow not working

I'm following Jonas Noell's tutorial on earth atmosphere. He's using Max, but also Vray and I am on Maya with Vray.

Normal Maya Vray falloff node does not include light/shadow for fading out a texture when it's in a shadow. Max does.

Someone online suggested using the Create Vray Plugin feature, and that has light/shadow in Maya but applying it does not work on any material I apply it to (I've tried applying it to the opacity). I'm guessing this is user error but any help is appreciated!

Unfortunately, the Shadow/Light Falloff mode is a 3ds Max-specific thing. It is not supported in Standalone (hence Maya), even though it's shown in the UI.

Maybe you could use a VRayToonMtl instead? It basically works in a similar fashion.

Ahhhh, ok that makes sense why it isn't working. I'll look at Toon as an option, but I'm slow...how would Toon be applied to make a realistic texture "disappear" in the shadows of an object?

Can you share the tutorial so I can see what the goal is exactly?

Sure. I did get it to work the way I needed it to with Falloff. But here is the tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTHKU9c6eAg
