  • Using environment fog and 3d procedurals

Ive been trying to fill a volume with environment fog and also use a 3d procedural texture node to control the fogs density. I can create the fog volume without any trouble, but I can't seem to get procedurals to have any effect on the density. Can someone please explain how to set this up?

    Thanks

I would also be interested in knowing how to do that in Maya. I tried with a triplanar projection but that doesn't do it.
      Thanks

        1. Use a 3d procedural
        2. Scale placement node appropriately for scene scale.
        3. Make sure if the procedural has a "Alpha Is Luminance" toggle to have it ON. The default pipe is outAlpha to Density.
        4. make sure to tune the fog distance. (default is 10). set it much lower. Like .5 to "solidify" the volume
        5. tweak simplify textures to speed up render time, or get higher quality. You can turn it off, for long renders, high quality.
        6. You probably want scatterGI, but that's up to you and your lighting.

If you need a scene, I can upload one for you.

          Thanks Andrew.
          It works like a charm.

I have another question, It seems that the fog colour has no effect. To have colour I have to put it in emission. Is this normal?

It works for me, but to be clearer, I am using vrayEnvironmentFog. If you are using scatter, or simple, I haven't tested it fully. But for VEF, color works properly for me. I am using no emission.

Has anyone tried the Fade Out mode on Enviorment Fog? I have a sphere where I am trying to fade the density out when mapping a 3D fractal to the Fog Density. The second I change the Fade out Radius to anything other than 0, it doesn't render my clounds anymore.
